What Career Center program did you participate in?

CDEV 145: Internship Course

What organization did you work with?

St. Mary’s Home for Boys

What did you do at your internship?

As a residential psych counselor at a level 5 treatment facility, I was tasked with many responsibilities. The main ones include; maintaining supervision of 10 clients in a cottage at all times, facilitating their needs, taking notes on all of their behaviors including how they control their mood and impulses, their social skills, and how they manage their structured time. I worked one on one with certain clients on real world skills as well as leading group skill training sessions where I maintained the attention of all clients for an hour while attempting to educate the kids on real world knowledge.

What is your biggest takeaway from your internship?

I have gained a lot from working in this position, but the main thing I have gained is a better sense of myself. I have found great friends through this job, people who understand the difficulties of the job just as well as me and
are able to respect me for them in a way no other people can. I have learned how to handle myself in new and unpredictable settings.

How is this internship connected to your career goals and/or future aspirations?

While this is not the route I originally wanted to take my psychology degree, I have gained a deep appreciation for the work of clinical psychological treatment. I’m still not sure if this work is something that I would like to
make a full career out of but it is definitely pushing me further into the field of psychology.
