What did you do at your internship?

This summer I am working as a Healthcare Administration Intern at a Skilled Nursing Facility in my hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota. This facility hosts 70 beds and has a high acuity patient load, who are served by skilled clinical and non-clinical staff. I primarily assist with the organization of projects, leadership team, time management, policies, and procedures in my role working directly with the board and administrator of the facility. Working in person at a healthcare facility has given me amazing first-hand experience and knowledge of said organization’s behavior and the need for skilled, empathetic, and trauma-informed care. I credit this role with helping me build patient relationships, enhance my professional network, and gain valuable public health and leadership experience. This job has also helped shape my future career and educational goals after completing undergrad.

What is your biggest takeaway from your internship?

Experiencing firsthand the interconnectedness of all of the actors in healthcare has been my biggest takeaway from this internship.

How is this internship connected to your career goals and/or future aspirations?

This internship is directly related to my future career goals and aspirations as it has provided me with the stepping stones and pathway for graduate school applications, career development programs, and a wide network of
contacts. I will be applying to MPH/MHA graduate school programs this winter. Participating in the business of healthcare in this role has also provided me with valuable experience in leadership, system organization, and strategic planning roles.
