Researching Your Interests

Understanding yourself is one of the first steps in making thoughtful decisions about majors, internships, and careers. Self-assessment simply means taking time to reflect on your interests, values, skills, strengths, and motivations—and thinking about how those might connect to possible career paths.

There isn’t a single test that will tell you exactly what you should do with your life. Instead, think of self-assessment and career research as tools for gathering information. Personality assessments, interest inventories, and reflection exercises can help you notice patterns in what you enjoy and what you do well. Career research tools can then help you explore fields, learn about job responsibilities, and understand what education or experience different roles require.

The goal isn’t to find one perfect answer—it’s to generate ideas and start asking better questions. As you learn more about yourself and the world of work, you’ll begin to see connections between your interests, your academic choices, and possible career paths.

The resources below are a great place to begin exploring. And remember, you don’t have to figure it all out on your own—the Career Center team is here to help you interpret what you learn and think through your next steps.
