Coming to Lewis and Clark as an international student can be disorienting. International students arrive on campus with a wide range of life experiences, but often face career barriers in a new country. The Career Center at Lewis and Clark is committed to helping international students access opportunities and overcome particular challenges they may face as they pursue their professional development.
Career Tips For International Students
- CVs vs. Resumes
Across many countries, the term CV is used to mean the same thing as resume. However, in the United States, a CV is an extensive document used primarily for research, academic, and some teaching positions. Resumes, on the other hand, are typically only 1-2 pages. They contain a short summary of your work experience, skills, volunteering, student activities, and degree. Career Consultants can help adapt your current materials to align with job applications in the US.
- Networking in the US
Styles of networking vary dramatically from country to country. However, in the US, your network refers to the broad group of people you know: friends, family, professors, advisors, classmates, alumni, and former employers. The Career Center can help you expand your network and connect with employers in the US based on your interests.
- Work Authorizations
Many international students require work authorization or other documentation to work in the US (either paid or unpaid) which can make job searching challenging. The Career Center recommends reaching out to the Office of International Students and Scholars for guidance on work authorization and related questions.
- Understanding American Workplace Culture
Workplace expectations can vary across countries and cultures. US employers may expect employees to communicate openly, ask questions, share their ideas, and advocate for themselves. The Career Center can help you understand these expectations and feel more confident navigating them in a way that respects your unique identity.
- Interviewing in the US
Interviews in the US often involve questions that ask you to describe your past experiences, accomplishments, and how you handled specific situations. International students may also need to become comfortable discussing their skills and experiences in ways that highlight their strengths. Career Consultants can help you practice interviewing and prepare responses to common interview questions.
Resources for International Students
Handshake is Lewis and Clark’s university-wide job board. The platform contains a “Filters” section where international students can search for jobs that “will sponsor,” “don’t require US work visas,” and/or “accept OPT/CPT.”
